About Roxani Oikonomou

Understanding People Has Always Been My Passion
Before I studied Micro-Expressions and FACS, I was already studying people.
Not from books.
From life.
For more than 30 years, my work in international hospitality, tourism, reception, sales, and guest relations placed me in daily contact with thousands of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
I discovered something very early:
People communicate much more than their words.
A smile.
A pause.
A change in energy.
A look that says something different from the sentence being spoken.
These small moments fascinated me.

My Journey: From Human Experience to Science

My interest in human behavior began with a simple desire:
To understand people better and to connect with them more deeply.
Throughout my career, I learned that the most important part of communication is not only what we say.
It is whether the other person feels seen, respected, and understood.
Later, my training in FACS and Micro-Expressions gave me a scientific framework for something I had experienced for years.
The science helped me understand what observation had already taught me:
The human face and behavior constantly communicate emotional information.

A Moment I Will Always Remember

The Connection That Goes Beyond a Reservation
A few months ago, during peak season, a guest called to make a reservation for an important date.
I have known her for more than 10 years. Over the years, we built a genuine connection that went beyond a typical guest relationship.
While we were completing the booking, she suddenly shared that she had an important meeting coming up and that she did not think her company would send her back again because she was going to retire.
I paused and asked her:
“Are you retiring?”
Her voice changed. Her energy changed. She became emotional.
“Yes,” she answered.
During that telephone call, the words came naturally:
We look forward to welcoming you. Your booking has been confirmed, and our Hotel is waiting to shine with your arrival.
She told me she never expected to hear such a compliment.
But sometimes a simple, sincere sentence can stay with someone and remind them that they are valued.
That moment reminded me of something I have learned throughout my career:
Behind every interaction, there is a human story.
For more than 30 years in tourism, hospitality, sales and communication, I have met thousands of people from different cultures and backgrounds. I have learned that people communicate much more than what they say.
A change in voice, a pause, a look, a shift in energy — these small signals can reveal emotions and create opportunities for deeper understanding.
This is what led me to explore Micro Expressions and Facial Behavior.
Because communication begins before words.
When we stop and truly see the person in front of us, we create trust, connection and meaningful human relationships.
Seeing Beyond the Face. Creating Human Connection.

My TEDx Journey

My TEDx talk:
“What Micro-Expressions Reveal About Our Emotions”
TEDxSwansea
was an important moment in my journey.
It allowed me to share a message that has guided my life:
Understanding people creates better communication.
My TEDx experience strengthened my belief that every person has a story, and every interaction is an opportunity for connection.

My Philosophy

I believe:
Observe before you judge.
Ask before you assume.
Connect before you influence.
Understanding another person is not always easy.
It requires curiosity, patience, and presence.
But when we truly see people, communication changes.

Today

Today, I combine:
  • More than 30 years of human experience
  • TEDx speaking experience
  • FACS and Micro-Expressions knowledge
  • Communication training
to help speakers, leaders, and organizations create communication that is clear, authentic, and meaningful.
Because communication is not only about being heard.
It is about being understood.

 My Methodology
Connect. Ask. Pause. Observe. Understand.
True understanding doesn’t happen instantly.
It begins when we choose to slow down, remain curious, and connect before forming conclusions.
This is the philosophy behind my work.
Whether I’m coaching a leader, preparing a TEDx speaker, or facilitating a corporate workshop, I guide people through a simple but powerful framework that transforms the way they communicate.
1. Connect
Build genuine human connection before trying to influence or persuade. Trust is created through presence, not performance.
2. Ask
Replace assumptions with curiosity. Meaningful questions uncover perspectives that observation alone never can.
3. Pause
Resist the urge to judge too quickly. A brief pause creates space for better decisions, empathy, and emotional regulation.
4. Observe
Notice verbal and nonverbal communication with intention. Facial expressions, body language, and tone provide valuable information—but never the complete story.
5. Understand
Understanding is not the starting point—it is the outcome.
It emerges when observation is combined with listening, thoughtful questions, and genuine human connection.

The Science Behind the Method
My work is grounded in evidence-based communication and behavioral science, combining:
  • Facial Action Coding System (FACS)
  • Micro-Expressions
  • Emotional Awareness
  • Behavioral Observation
  • Life Stories _Research
  • Leadership & Hospitality Experience
  • TEDx Speaking & Executive Communication Coaching
These are not the destination.
They are the tools that help you  build trust, improve communication, and create stronger human relationships.

My Philosophy
The face gives us information.
The person gives us meaning.
And meaning can only be discovered when we choose to:
Connect. Ask. Pause. Observe. Understand.
This is more than a methodology.
It is a different way of approaching people. It helps leaders, teams, and speakers communicate with greater trust, emotional awareness, and authentic human connection.

My Story

My journey has always been about people.
From the beginning of my professional life, I was fascinated by human connection — by the stories behind people’s faces, emotions and behaviors. I loved meeting people from different cultures, listening to their experiences and creating genuine connections.
Throughout more than 30 years in tourism, hospitality, sales and communication, I learned that every person carries a story that is not always expressed through words.
Many times, I discovered that what appeared to be anger was actually fear, what seemed like distance was often uncertainty, and what was hidden behind silence was a need to be understood.
This curiosity and love for people led me to explore the science of Micro Expressions and Facial Behavior.
Through my training in Micro Expressions and Facial Action Coding System (FACS), I combined my real-world experience with scientific knowledge to better understand how emotions and non-verbal communication influence our relationships.
My TEDxSwansea journey allowed me to share this message with a wider audience: before we judge, we need to understand. Before we react, we need to observe.
Today, my mission is to help people and organizations communicate with more awareness, empathy and trust — seeing beyond the face and creating deeper human connections.
